MERCEDES BENZ GLS becomes the largest utility vehicle in Mercedes-Benz series though it is quite similar to the previous one with a few significant updates.
When it comes to 7-passenger luxury SUV, then Mercedes Benz-GL has a big name in it, same like the Mercedes S-Class has the name in the category of Sedans. GL-sport utility vehicle was a popular one with a massive demand and appreciation by car-buyers. GLS is its successor and expects to continue the same trend of popularity among car buyers. With a few modifications, GLS has turned into an aggressive and blunt vehicle with revised features. The model represents and the ideal package of price, performance, fuel consumption and convenience.
There are a few changes in interior and exterior body. It is close to the S-Class as well. If you simply want the best three-row SUV then MERCEDES BENZ GLS is the appropriate choice. MERCEDES BENZ GLS-EXTERIOR
The front side of the vehicle is bolder and stronger. A fancy grille is present which is wider and pushes the headlights on both sides. At the back side, there are a massive bumper and LED tail-lights. The front air-takes are wide and 21-inch wheels are featured. The vehicle uses Night pack, along with mirrors and blacked-out lower lips. A massive Mercedes logo is also carved on the front and the head lights curve down to give a fancier look.
The tail is modified. Differences between trim levels are minor. There is a 20-inch diameter on GLS550 and 21 inches on GLS63. Rest of the models use 19-inches. The GLS63 can be visually recognized by a slightly deeper front face and quad exhaust tips instead of dual one. Body dimensions are slightly changed and wheelbase is kept the same without any changes. The entire body shape is boxy which results in an advantage. It increases the interior space and helps in making an excellent room space for people inside.
MERCEDES BENZ GLS-INTERIOR
Coming towards inside, the interior is refreshed. The middle of the dash features the infotainment screen now as in many other models of the series, though it is not the entire remake that has been given to C-Class sedans. In addition, upholstery options, and ambiance of the cabin have been upgraded including a few more finishes. The packaging of GLS is almost alike GL. The vehicle provides enough seating space for adults in three rows. At the front side, passengers can sit on seats with an option of massage. Also, the second row has the option of heat and power resistance along with folding option.
Folding the seats of second and third row increases the carbon space of about 100 cubic feet. Head and leg space in first two rows is generous. Cargo area can accommodate nearly 94 cubic feet with two rear rows folded. Cabin also has a control layout with advanced features. MERCEDES BENZ GLS has taken some very bold decisions in its designing, like heated seats, driver-seat memory, power lift-gate, power folding third-row seat. Leather upholstery is available only in GLS550 and GLS63. Also, driver safety features like a forward collision warning, emergency braking, blind spot warning, electronic car parking, lane-keep assistance are also provided. Attention assist helps drowsy drivers to remain alerted throughout the drive.
Surround view camera is featured in GLS550 and 63, however, the other two feature it optionally. In addition, all models feature five years of Mercedes-Benz Connect infotainment and telematics that lets smartphone app to lock and unlock the vehicle, along with vehicle-starting option. A touchpad controller operates through finger swipes and taps like a smartphone’s screen. It helps in manipulating command menus in addition to steering-wheel controls and a knob. Mercedes offer an off-road engineering package that increases ride height. Air springs are standard with some body roll in corners. Despite the body lean, the brakes have marks and paddles are well-settled.
Engines are updated from the previous generation, with V8 in GLS550. It does not result in an increase in power as compared to other models. The other models, however, result in almost 15-27 horsepower increase. All these engines are turbo-charged also, with gas engine increasing two turbos and provide fuel saving stop and start option to automatically power off when a vehicle is not moving and restart when brakes are released.
Furthermore, talking about engine configurations, GLS 350d has 3.0 Liter diesel V-6 with 255 horsepower and 455-pound-feet of torque. GLS450 has 3.0 Liter V-6 with 362 horsepower and 369-pound-feet of torque, GLS550 has 4.7 Liter V-8 with 449 horsepower and 516-pound feet of torque.The 9-speed automatic transmission is received by all these models. Only GLS63 uses 7-speed automatic and uses 5.5 Liter V-8 producing 577 horsepower and 561-pound-feet of torque. Maximum towing capacity is 7500 pounds.
